Name: Yusuke Kitagawa Canon: Persona 5 Canon Point: Post-game Age: 18 Appearance: one + two History: Yusuke’s entry on the SMT wiki Personality: Passion: Yusuke, first and foremost, is an artist, and he prioritizes this passion above all else. That is due to the influences of both nature and nurture: his mother was an artist, and when she died of an untimely stroke when he was three, he was taken in by the famed and influential artist Ichiryusai Madarame. Under his tutelage, Yusuke became very talented in his own right, and was accepted into a prestigious high school for the arts. He is overwhelmingly concerned with aesthetics, someone who is able to see the beauty in everything from lobsters to crucifixion. Eternally curious, he continues on with the Phantom Thieves after his own problems are dealt with because infiltrating the minds of others, he believes, will give him better insight into the human heart, and will serve as inspiration in his artistic endeavors. Despite his oddities, Yusuke is generally a kind and gentle person, always the first to feel empathy towards someone who is suffering. He puts 100% into everything that he does, whether it be his art, vigilantism, or even simple hobbies. Lacks tact: His upbringing was so focused on nurturing his talents, to the exclusion of all else, that Yusuke ended up being very sheltered. He's not quite awkward, in fact, he appears very calm and collected on the surface, but he is described as intense, eccentric, and generally a bit strange. He speaks respectfully while also cutting right to the chase. Yusuke prefers to be straight forward, so much so that he tends to ignore social norms for the sake of efficiency, such as asking a stranger through the subway station to ask her to pose nude for his next painting. (He claims to be purely interested in her from an artistic standpoint, of course.) Because of this, he has a habit of just doing things without asking, pointing out things that don’t need pointing out, and being unintentionally offensive. Stubborn/Defensive: When first introduced, Yusuke could be described as passive. Even though he boldly propositions Ann to model for him, he realizes that Madarame has taken advantage of him and his fellow students by claiming their work as his own, and then using his influence to blacklist them from the art world so that they can't stop him. Although he grows up in poor, crowded conditions, with never enough to eat and even the implied physical abuse, he stays quiet and allows it to continue because he feels that he must remain loyal to the man that took him in, and even lies to defend him when the party characters try to help him. Yusuke manages to hide how he is feeling and convince himself that it isn’t so bad as a survival tactic, he lashes out in defense of his abuser, because he sees himself as not having any other options. It is only after he discovers that his mentor watched his mother have her stroke, and allowed her to die so that he could take credit for her work (and then became famous as the artist behind his mother's painting) that Yusuke turns his back on him in anger. He is disgusted to know that his mentor and guardian had been a fraud, and vows to end his manipulation and abuse, both of Yusuke and his other past and future students. Insecurity: Yusuke's problems don't end when Madarame is dealt with. After his mentor confesses his crimes and Yusuke relocates to the school dorms, he has to learn how to carry on his chosen path by himself. The manipulation he had endured doesn't go away, and he continues to struggle with having confidence in his own skills. He struggles with trying to get his work recognized, and maintaining a balance between artistic integrity and keeping himself fed. He views his former mentor as a sell-out for not only stealing his mother's work, but altering it to make it easier to sell, and is looking for a way to make an honest living doing what he loves. Powers and Abilities: Yusuke can transform into his alter-ego Fox, which grants him a disguise and a katana that appears at his side. While he is in this state, he can summon his Persona, Kamu Susano-o, the Shinto god of the sea and storms. This is his true self, his rebellious spirit given a physical form of its own, which has the following abilities: Bufudyne/Mabufudyne: Powerful ice-elemental magic, offensive in nature. Sujukaja/Masukukaja: The ability to enhance Yusuke’s speed, and any allies in the immediate area. Speed Master: Automatically casts Sukukaja (see above) when the Persona is summoned. High Counter: 20% chance of countering an enemy attack. Mind Slice: A physical attack that has the potential to leave the enemy confused. Deadly Fury: A physical attack that becomes more powerful if Yusuke works as part of a team. Vorpal Blade: Severe physical damage to all foes, Brave Blade: Colossal physical damage to a single foe. Inventory: A bookbag which contains: A sketchbook A collection of pencils |
